Discount Wigs & Hair Supply opened about 3 years ago at 2119 E. Magnolia Ave., in the business complex where the Cricket Store and Knoxville Pawn have been a mainstay. Owner Joanna, named the store based on her intent to offer the lowest prices on quality hair and products.
A space in the rear of the hair store is occupied by Joana Africa Market, which Knox County Health Dept. certified. It offers African foods not found in standard grocery stores that include frozen fish, goat meat, can goods, staples, and spices.
The grocery store turned out to be an unforeseen benefit and is classified as an essential business, which allowed the Discount Hair Store to remain open.
It was the only hair supply store in the Knoxville area that was open during the COVID-19 shutdown.
As a result, the hair supply store experienced phenomenal sales. In an effort to appreciate customers and pay-it-forward, Joana held a raffle with entries from purchasing customers.
With a purchase, customers were entered in a drawing for $500 that would be applied to the winner’s utility bill (KUB or other East Tennessee utility provider).
Consider making an effort to support businesses that appreciate your patronage and that make an effort to support the community it serves.
If you’re looking for hair to braid, weave, crochet, or for other applications, Joanna probably has what you need. The customer service is patient, informative, and helpful. The stock includes a wide selection of beauty supplies, cosmetics, lashes, and personal care products and accessories.
To show-up and step-in to any occasion looking fabulous on short notice, consider making emergency/back-up hair an essential part of your wardrobe. Whether the occasion is business, public, or private (just saying). The store offers a selection of wigs, hairpieces, hair additions, and lace-fronts in synthetic or human hair in textures that include straight, wavy, and soft curls crafted from International human hair from Asia, Hawaii, India, and African natural or processed, and more.
The staff at Discount Hair Supply will also install the purchase of lace-front wigs for a small fee. You can exit the store wearing your purchase and ready for whatever comes your way.
If you prefer braids or hair additions, Joana is from the Motherland, speaks fluent English, and offers many original African braiding styles and techniques. Visit joanahairbraiding.com; or call 865-865-385-5818 for an appointment or consultation.

When we return to a ‘new normal’ make an effort to continue shopping at community-based businesses that support your community.
Editor’s note: Thank you Joana for your kind and giving spirit. You could have kept that rainfall for yourself, as most other businesses do, but you chose to give back. This is an example of what should be expected/demanded from businesses built on a one community.
