George “Sonny” Davis, Jr., age 53, born November 10, 1965, transitioned on to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, September 21, 2019. George graduated from Austin East High School, Class of 1985, where he truly loved playing the drums in the band. Shortly after high school, he was united in matrimony to Joequetta Dumas (1986). He was employed at Lambcon Ready Mix from where he retired after 10 years of dedicated service.
George attended New Salem Baptist Missionary Church where he served as Deacon and church drummer.
“Sonny” was a special and loving person who never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand. To his grandkids, he was “Pay Pay,” to Pastor Miller, he was “The Bodyguard,” and to many others, he was known as “Big George,” “Big G,” or mostly “The Drummer,” it is certain, he will be fondly remembered and forever cherished by everyone.
Preceded in death by his father George Davis, Sr. and his sister, Sandra “San” Davis.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Joequetta Davis; sons, George (Desma) Davis, III and Jordan Davis; three grandchildren George Zachariah “Zach” Davis, Zofia “BeBe” Rhea Davis and Gabriel “Zee” Davis; mother, Rosella Davis; sisters, Mary Hardin of Great Bend, Kansas, Evelyn (Cliff) Thomas, Gloria (Michael) Stevenson, Darlene (Greg) Freeman and Glinda Davis and a host of nieces, nephews and many friends.
Saturday, September 28, 2019, the family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. with funeral to follow at Greater Warner Tabernacle A.M.E Zion Church, 3800 MLK Jr. Avenue. Knoxville, TN. Reverend Dr. Cleo Brooks, Jr., and Pastor Sanford Miller, Sr., Eulogist. Interment will be Sunday, September 29, 2019 at 10 a.m. at New Gray Cemetery where a white dove release will conclude the service.
