Greenwaste, consisting of leaves, brush, logs, tree branches, grass, etc., typically makes up 20-30% of the total municipal solid waste stream. By recycling Christmas trees, Knox County hopes to raise awareness about the advantage of keeping this type of material out of area landfills, and instead utilizing it to produce mulch and other beneficial soil amendments which can be returned to the landscape.
City residents can place their bare trees at the curb for pick-up by Public Service workers as time and resources allow between regular leaf collection and monthly brush pick-up. Public Service Department crews will be concentrating on leaf collection and will pick up brush and Christmas trees as time allows. (The regular two-week schedule for brush will not begin until March 1st, depending on the area of the City. Thank you for your patience.) More information here; City of Knoxville solid waste.
