Actions for Week of August 8, 2021

  1. Thank the President – With the urging of the President, the CDC extended the federal eviction moratorium until October 3rd, and is encouraging money set aside for renters and landlords to be quickly paid out by the state.  Unfortunately, the State of TN is not going to honor the moratorium. You can send a message to the White House thanking them at this link.
  2. Comment on Public Instruction Restrictions – Tennessee plans to start levying $1-5million fines on school districts when teachers violate new restrictions on classroom discussion of systemic racism, white privilege and sexism.  See this pdf for a list of rules and restrictions. TN Dept. of Education will accept public comments on this plan until end of day, Wednesday August 11th. Comments can be sent to EDU.PublicComments@tn.gov . Already parent groups are complaining that teaching about Ruby Bridges (first Black child to integrate New Orleans school) and Martin Luther King Jr are making white students uncomfortable.
  3. Infrastructure Bill & Sen. Hagerty – The Senate stopped debate on the infrastructure bill yesterday but passage has been held up all weekend by TN Sen. Bill Hagerty. It appears he wants attention from the press. He knows the bill has enough votes to pass and he’s refused to listen to requests from fellow Republicans to let the bill proceed. GOOD NEWS!

    1. The Dept of Justice has put States on notice about election audits and voting changes.
    2. Complaint has been filed in 15 states against American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). TN is one of the states. The complaint asks state oversight agencies to examine the relationship between ALEC, state legislators and the bills they’ve introduced.
    3. The EPA is going to impose new limits on wastewater pollution from coal power plants.
    4. The Justice Dept will not defend Rep. Mo Brooks in the suit filed by Rep. Swalwell regarding Brooks’ role in the January 6th insurrection.
    5. The Biden Administration has extended the payment pause on student loan debt until January 2022.
    6. Justice Breyer of SCOTUS stopped a Maine church’s attempt to block Delta variant restrictions.
    7. Earlier this spring the Arkansas governor signed into a law banning facemask mandates. He now regrets that bill. Fortunately, a judge blocked it from going into effect last week.

    3. Did you know that while Gov. Lee won’t incentivize vaccines in people for COVID, he is paying farmers to vaccinate their cattle? The governor’s spokesperson declined to say whether Lee himself has received money for vaccinating his own cows.
    4. Did you know that in the early 90s Dolly Parton started receiving royalties for Whitney Houston’s rendition of the song, I Will Always Love You. Dolly quietly used the funds to invest in a building in a Black Nashville neighborhood.
