In pursuit of Racial Justice. Knoxville’s black communities are in peril, our youth have always been targeted. The most recent violence targeted students at predominately black Austin-East Magnet High School in the first months of this year. This entire school body and the community are traumatized. The violence must stop!
Beck Cultural Exchange Center is presenting its 10th virtual Racial Justice Community Town Hall at 4 pm. Friday, April 16, 2021. Moderator by Beck director Rene Kesler with special guest Kwanbe Bullard, a 2017 Austin-East graduate.
This town hall meeting hopes to encourage youth by spotlighting the successes of their peers. Young black male alumni of A-E will have the opportunity to speak about their experiences and challenges with the hope of finding potential solutions.
The panel is of 12 young men who graduated from Austin-East High School in the years from 2003 to 2010, with one from the class of 1998.
Kesler wants to change the perception of black youth by highlighting the good. “The panel is a small representation of the many who have wisdom for this moment and are doing amazing things,” said Kesler.
“We need to hear their voices speak to the community, teachers, administrators, students and allies.”
