KNOXVILLE, TN (February 1, 2021) – In celebration of Black History Month, Marcus Hall proprietor and custom designer of Marc/Nelson Denim, 700 E. Depot Ave. in Knoxville, is sharing information on historical, iconic African-Americans who have made significant contributions to the world of fashion.
Hall will be highlighting historic black fashion icons who helped to pave the way for others, that includes him. Hall is an established 21st-century designer of predominately men’s casual and denim couture.
The Black designers featured are among those who have shaped fashion history, both with their innovative designs and the sacrifices they made that paved the way for Black tailors, seamstresses, and designers.
Ann Lowe, (December 14, 1898 – February 25, 1981) was the first African-American to be recognized as a noted fashion designer and the first A-A woman to own a store on New York’s Madison Avenue.

Daniel Day aka “Dapper Dan” was born on August 8, 1944, in Harlem, NY. Dapper Dan’s unique designs provided the 1980’s rap culture with its signature style, which was inspired by the emergence of up-scale name brandings such as Fendi, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton. Gucci later partnered with Day, who is recognized as a luxury brand out of Harlem.
His influential store, Dapper Dan’s Boutique, 1982–92 introduced high fashion to the hip hop world. His clients over the years including Eric B. & Rakim, Salt-N-Pepa, LL Cool J, and Jay-Z.
