Huddler's Post Election Updates, Action Items

Post-election developments appear to be heading in the right direction. For the first, on Sunday, Nov. 15, President Donald Trump recognized he lost (although he also said the results were rigged). The turnout for the March on Washington, the previous Saturday, was also relatively small with an estimated attendance of only 12,000. The attendance at state capitols was also small.

Protect democracy and people’s choice. Groups protecting our Democracy continue to monitor developments. Tentative plans are being made for events in the near future, supporting the outcome of the election. Information will be made available when provided.

In the meantime, consider the actions and events list below for a myriad of opportunities to learn more, get involved, or keep track of important post-election deadlines as follows:

Nov 23^rd, Mon: Last Day for ballots to be received and still be counted in any state.
Dec 8th, Tues: Deadline for states to certify election results. Under the Electoral Count Act, this is the date by which states are meant to have counted votes, settled disputes, and determined the winner of their electoral college votes. Governors are supposed to create certificates of ascertainment listing the winner of the election and the slate of electors.
Dec 14th, Mon: Electoral Votes are Cast. Here is a summary of the state laws governing electors.
Dec 23rd, Wed. Electoral Votes must arrive in Washington DC.
Jan 3, 2021, Sun: New Congress is sworn in at noon.
Jan 6th, Wed: Electoral Votes are counted. Read about the process here.
Jan 20th, Wed: Inauguration Day. President-Elect takes the oath of office at noon.

Suggested Actions for Week of November 15, 2020

Request Countywide Mask Mandates: – COVID cases in BC skyrocketing. The TN Medical Association is asking all County Mayors to enact mask mandates based on the criteria outlined in its July 8^th letter. Death rates are higher in TN counties without mask mandates. Please call the office of your county Mayor to express your desire for a mask mandate. For coronavirus data, visit this website.

Support Transition – Members of the outgoing administration are obstructing the new transition team from receiving information, office space, government email addresses, and money to prepare for taking over government functions in January. Ban 45 from Twitter – On a daily basis over the last week, Twitter has flagged tweets made by 45 as containing false or contested information about the election. Consider signing this petition asking his twitter account be suspended.

This facilitated conversation about race relations, prejudice, and stereotypes is designed to break down barriers, help youth see others in new ways, and establish connections with youth who might look, act, and think differently. Future Maryville Huddle Meeting Dates: We will continue to meet via Zoom on the last Thursday of the month. The Oct 29 meeting topic was ‘Racism & Breonna Taylor’. ABOUT: Huddlers of The Women’s March Coalition was inspired by the 2017 Women’s March on Washington. Huddles are divisions in communities coordinating and working with connected huddles and groups focused on similar missions that include; Maryville Huddle, Blount County United, SURG-BC, SCNW, Love Trumps Hate-Knoxville, WMC-Power Through TN, and many other groups.
