“The Copper Queen” opera will be the Marble City Opera’s last performance of the 2021-2022 season. All productions are written by an American composer, sung in English, and explored the experiences of different marginalized communities. “The Copper Queen” is one of those.
Knoxville’s own Marble City Opera will present the first live-on-stage performance of The Copper Queen opera. The performance will be at 7:30 pm, June 2 thru 4, at Flying Anvil Theater, 1300 Rocky Hill Rd. in Knoxville. The Copper Queen opera was composed by Clint Borzoni and stage director John De Los Santos and has been described as a cross between La Traviata and The Shining. The Copper Queen won the top prize for Arizona Opera’s commission program. – The Arizona SPARK.
The opera is based on the 1910 true story of Julia Lowell, who was forced to live in captivity at the Copper Queen Hotel in Bisbee, Arizona in service to the town’s men. A century later, Addison Moore—a stranger to Bisbee—visits Room 315, the site of Julia’s tragic suicide, where her ghost now famously roams. The riveting tale—told across generations—is one of human bondage, furtive romance, secret connections, and ultimately—redemption.
The creative team includes orchestra conductor Reginald Houze, pianist and music director Brandon Coffer, librettist and stage director John De los Santos. The orchestra will accompany performances by the cast and characters listed below:
