ABOUT URBAN RENEWAL: A process where privately owned properties within a designated renewal area are purchased or taken by eminent domain by a municipal redevelopment authority, razed, and assigned to selected developers to devote them to other uses. In Knoxville, privately-owned Black residential and business properties were taken, razed then ‘reassigned’ to white owners and for public domain as roadways and interstate highways. The James White Parkway is one.
