John D. “New York” Townsend (age 58)
John Derrick Townsend, Jr., age 58, passed away on October 11, 2020 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
John was born April 30, 1962 to Vera and John Townsend, Sr. at Medical Center Hospital in Harlem, New York. Throughout his adolescence, John loved school, excelling in math, and sports such as swimming, basketball, and boxing. John also loved traveling and made a career out of it, working for Armstrong Relocation for many years.
Johnny was loyal to his family and friends, and when he dedicated himself to his beliefs, he always followed through. A man of faith, when he said he had your back, he meant it! Johnny was generous and provided complete and constant support to his crew, kids and Allah.
Johnny’s life could be a book; his stories about his life and experiences could captivate a room. He was energetic and he genuinely wanted the best for people. A proud father and grandfather, excellent brother, encouraging uncle and loving friend.
Survived by his children, Sparkle and Starr Watts, Nasir Amin-Tsadaq Burns, Nairobe Amir-Talib Burns, Nubian Asaad-Tariq Burns Townsend, Nujani Aaquill-Taahid Burns Townsend, Naraiman Alesha-Tahani Burns and Noorjahan Alma-Tahiyah Burns Townsend; grandchildren, Skyla Patterson, Lavale Wright, Tyshawn Melvin, Tianna Melvin and Talayzia Melvin; sister, Theresa Ford; niece, Kiana Frazier; extended Townsend family; devoted companion of 10 years, mother of younger children, Alesia Burns, J-Hood and the MEDUSA Family.

Saturday, October 24, 2020, a public walkthrough visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Fourth United Presbyterian Church, 1323 Broadway , Knoxville, TN with a funeral service for immediate family and close friends to follow. Social distancing and face masks are required. During this time, we will remain in compliance with the Governor’s Executive Order #17 (COVID-19).
