Who will you send to the Tennessee House of Representatives for District 15? (Atty. Troy Jones is also on the ballot as an independent. (The Enlightener didn’t find a picture to post, nor did he respond to the invitation.)

 

Knoxville, TN (July 7, 2020) – The East Tennessee Enlightener is sponsoring a debate at 6:30 pm, Thursday, July 9, at the Honey Rock Tribe of Judah Event Center at 4003 Holston Drive. Co-hosts are  Patricia Willimas and Hubert Smith.

This was planned when the COVID-19 infection rate was declining, restrictions were being lifted, businesses were cautiously opening up… I was hopeful that would continue and by July 9th it would be safe to have an in-person debate while implementing safety precautions.

The opening of parks, pools, resorts and an influx of tourism coupled with the “I don’t wear a mask folk, there is no curve. The numbers are shooting straight up at an alarming daily rate.

I was encouraged to proceed with the debate. Also, I have yet to see a ZOOM debate. Some of us just haven’t gotten there yet. Voters and the candidates need to be able to see, translate the eye-to-eye contact, body language, and other ques of sincerity, commitment, dishonesty.

The Honey Rock Tribe of Judah Event Center is spacious and accommodating. We have taken every precaution for the safety of the attendees. Seating is socially distanced and limited. Sanitizers will be available at the sign-in desk, as well as required masks if you don’t have one.

Additional safety precautions include: You must be at least 18-years old to attend; Children under 21 will not be allowed; Questions from the audience will be submitted on index cards (to minimize mingling sharing/passing a microphone).

The candidates will also be distanced and using their own microphones to prevent any cross-contamination, as well as the moderators.

Yes! We can do this safely.

For those who are self-quarantined the D-15 State House debate will be live-streamed and can be viewed here, and on the East Tennessee Enlightener Facebook page, CTV plans to air as its schedule allows.(Attempts were made to live-stream on the Knox County D1 Facebook page to no avail).
