KNOX SCHOOLS IMPORTANT DEADLINES: Apply for P-EBT Meal Benefits; Virtual School Survey

Based on the COVID-19 information available today, Knox County School families who might want to take advantage of a virtual school option in the coming school year (if schools reopen in the fall)  to complete a survey by Tuesday, July 7. Apply for additional Pandemic-EBT card by July 13.

KNOXVILLE, TN (July 1, 2020) – Knox County Schools is working on a reopening plan for the fall semester, and Superintendent Bob Thomas will share that plan with the Board of Education on July 15.

Our goal is to return to an in-person school setting in the fall if we can do so while reasonably protecting the health and safety of our students and staff.

However, we recognize that in this scenario some families would not be comfortable with a return to school. As a result, we will have a virtual option for those students.

We are still finalizing the details of this program, but for planning purposes and in order to make decisions about staffing and resources, we need to know how many parents would most likely utilize this virtual option.

With that in mind, we are asking KCS families who would most likely utilize the virtual school option — assuming that schools are reopened in the fall and based on the information available today — to complete an online survey by Tuesday, July 7. Families who would NOT utilize a virtual option DO NOT need to complete the survey.

This decision is not binding, but family responses will be extremely important to help the district plan for the future. When further details of the program are announced, families will be asked to enroll if interested.

New P-EBT for ‘Extra’ Food Benefits (apply by July 13)

Federal legislation passed in response to COVID-19 includes a new program that allows children who are eligible for free or reduced-price meals at school to receive extra food benefits.

Under the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) program, families with children who receive free or reduced-price meals at school or attend a Community Eligibility Provision school may receive financial assistance to replace school meals that were missed in March, April and May due to COVID-19 school closures. The program will provide parents with EBT benefits valued at $5.70 per child for each day that child qualifies for the program.

P-EBT benefits do not replace any child nutrition program meals being offered. Children may continue to receive grab-and-go meals or emergency food at COVID-19 emergency feeding sites offered by schools or community organizations, even if they receive P-EBT benefits.

Parents who already receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits do not need to apply. Funds for these families began arriving on the EBT card they already use beginning Friday, June 12.

Parents who do not receive SNAP benefits are still eligible if:

  • Their children attend a Community Eligibility Provision school (see full list below*), or
  • Their children qualify for free or reduced-price school meals.

These parents need to apply for P-EBT at this link. The application period ends July 13, 2020, at 5:30 p.m. Eastern time.
