Highlander Center Summer Youth Program Accepting Applicants
Every year, Highlander’s Seeds of Fire youth organizing program has hosted an in-person week-long gathering, bringing together youth living and organizing across the US South to skill-build, and develop deep relationships across regions.
This year, due to COVID-19, we have moved our work virtually because we know the work doesn’t stop, it evolves. And it’s vitally important now to have spaces that center young people and support youth leadership in organizing to #DefendBlackLife and while bringing joy, respite, and co-learning/teaching to the forefront.
Led by an Advisory Committee of eight youths of color (ages 14+), with the support of Highlander staff, applications are still being accepted for our Semilla’s Summer Learning Series!
Training to build organizing skills and community are held every Tuesday and Thursday at 4pm ET until July 16, 2020 on topics including Direct Action, the School to Prison Pipeline, Popular Education 101, Herbalism, and Animation.
The training is specific to young people ages 13-23 in the Southern United States. Priority is given to youth of color, rural, cash-poor, immigrant, queer, and marginalized youths. English-Spanish and ASL interpreters are available.
The sessions vary with intergenerational wisdom from presenters who represent many segments of our community.
