George M. Phillips (age 80)

KNOXVILLE, TN – On Wednesday, April 28, 2020, George M. Phillips, devoted father, family member and friend, passed away at age 80.

He was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee and graduated from Austin High School. He worked for various companies throughout his life, most notable were the Knoxville Utility Board (KUB) and The Foundry. Like his mother, Thelma “Pretty Williams” Porter, George was very active in local politics and served on several campaigns. He was a lifelong member of Payne Avenue Missionary Baptist Church where he was active in community service as well.

George was preceded in death by his parents George F. Phillips and Thelma Williams Porter, and stepfather Clifford Porter; siblings, Flossie McGinnis Lyons, Frederick Samuel McGinnis, Willetta Howell Rogers, PhD, and Frances Porter.

He is survived by his daughters Marcella (Kacy) Rodgers and Georgette Phillips; their siblings Fadra (Cory) Bryson and John Walton, Jr.; grandchildren, Kacy II, Kevon, Tevin; great-grandchildren, Aminah and Zahra; sister, Agnes Phillips Reece; a host of nieces and nephews; friends and church members.
