Anderson County schedule of events (updated)

ANDERSON CO. TN (Jan. 14, 2020) – Local organizations and congregations in Oak Ridge and the Anderson County area are joining together to offer opportunities for residents to come together to get to know each other and build community.

The celebration kick-off is a Human Rights Rally on Saturday, January 18. Various events are planned through the month of February, with a World Day of Prayer finale on Friday, March 6^th. More events to come, please join us!

Soup and Chili Dinner this Friday, January 17th from 5 to 7 p.m. at Spurgeon Chapel A.M.E.Zion Church, 100 South Benedict Avenue. Stop by after work for food and fellowship, $5 per person donation. This is an annual event of the Spurgeon Chapel Lay Council to support enrichment activities throughout the year, according to Jimmy Robertson, President of the Lay Council. Rev.Churchill W. Moore Sr. is the pastor.

Human Rights Rally & March, 2 pm, Saturday, January 18, Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church (809 Oak Ridge Turnpike) will commemorate the Women’s March and the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The doors will open at 1 pm to make signs for marchers. The moderator will be Pastor Mark Flynn of First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge. A celebration in music will be provided by the Oak Valley Voice of Praise, the UUC Sorta Singers, and the First Presbyterian Choir. The scheduled speakers are Rose Weaver, Kesha Shipe Waters, Jake Morrill, and Lissie Meza Beehan. After the program, those who choose will march to First Presbyterian Church (1051 Oak Ridge Turnpike) where they will be greeted with refreshments and sponsor’s information. Hosted by the Anderson County Democratic Women’s Club.

Green McAdoo Cultural Organization MLK Prayer Breakfast, 8:30 am, Monday at the Green McAdoo Recreation Center at 101 School Street in Clinton, TN. This event will begin with breakfast followed by a prayer service at 9 am. There is no charge, and we look forward to seeing everyone there. The center is located at 101 School St. in Clinton.

23^rd Annual Atomic Sportsman’s Club Breakfast, 8 am, Monday, January 20, at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike. The speaker will be Knoxville City Councilwoman Gwen McKenzie who is the first African-American woman elected. The theme is: “Embracing Dr. King’s Message of Love to Build Unity in our Community”.

AKA 32nd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, 9:45 am, Monday, January 20, at the New Hope Center, 602 Scarboro Rd. The guest speaker will be Elder Henry Watson, Pastor of Mt. Zion Bapt. Church in Oak Ridge. The MC will be Dr. J. Camille Hall, Professor, UT College of Social Work. This year’s theme is “Dream, Believe, Do! Sponsored by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Church Women United will provide cookies and Methodist Medical Center will provide lunch.

Untold Reflections of African-Americans Exhibit, January -March 2020. A showcase of African-Americans who made significant contributions to the Oak Ridge Atomic Bomb Manhattan Project during the Cold War Era. The contributions of African-Americans are too often left out of accounts of the United States race to build the world’s first atomic bombs during World War II. Despite facing severe discrimination, they were instrumental in the success of the Manhattan Project and its world-changing mission. Hosted by Scarboro Community, a historically African-American community of Oak Ridge.

The Express Yourself: Youth Talent Show is accepting applications from youth (up to age 18) in Knox, Anderson, Roane and area counties through January 31st. The event will be 3 pm, Saturday, February 22nd at the Historic Grove Theater.
