KNOXVILLE (Nov. 11, 2019) Mayor Rogero will mark the completion of the City’s $15.8 million streetlight retrofit project with an illumination ceremony at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Emory Place in Downtown North.
Mayor Rogero will be joined by Sustainability Director Erin Gill, Sustainability Project Manager Brian Blackmon, City staff and representatives of other project partners, and City Council representatives.
The City contracted with Siemens to perform turn-key design and installation services to convert approximately 28,500 streetlights from high pressure sodium (HPS) lights to modern light emitting diode (LED) technology. The design phase began in Summer 2017, and installation began in September 2018.
Historically, before the retrofit project, the City spent more than $4 million annually to cover the energy, operations and maintenance costs of street lights. As a result of this project, the City is saving over $2 million annually on the streetlighting system.
The project has also pushed the City past its goal to reduce municipal greenhouse gas emissions 20 percent before 2020.
