Marshall Stair is a candidate on the 2019 ballot for Knoxville City Mayor
Education has always been important to me, but having a daughter offered a new perspective. Ensuring we have top quality schools in the city of Knoxville is crucial for our students, our city, and our future. While the city doesn’t run the schools in Knox County, this is an issue that’s way too important to be silent on. Join me in being an advocate for our public schools.
One of the ways we can do this is by expanding the Community Schools model. During my time on council, we have increased the number of schools participating in this program from 1 to 15. The program partners schools with area nonprofits to provide resources to students such as after-school tutoring and mentorship programs, additional meals, school supplies, and even health care in some cases.
These resources are critically important if we want to make sure our lower-income schools have the same educational outcomes as our higher-income schools. This is how we create equitable outcomes and close the achievement gap within our school system. I would continue this important program as mayor, and with your support, we can make sure all our students receive a high-quality education, no matter where they live or what school they attend. Will you join me to ensure our next mayor stays focused on our schools?
