From Sarah Herron, BCDP Chair – It is with a broken heart that I inform you that our beloved Dorothy Mitchell-Kincaid passed away last night, Wednesday, August 14, 2019.
She died peacefully in her home with family and friends by her side. Dorothy lived to help others. Throughout her career, which included many years at the renowned Highlander Center, she worked tirelessly to bring positive change to people in Appalachia and the deep south – from coal miners in West Virginia to farmers in South Carolina.
While battling pancreatic cancer, she established The Beloved Community Outreach Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)3 that provides support to Blount Countians with chronic illnesses.
Join me in extending deepest sympathies to her husband Fred, their sons, grandchildren, extended family and friends.
She will be so very missed by so many people, including me. I am truly devastated but grateful and humbled to call her my friend.
Dorothy was a truth-teller and a social justice warrior. Her impact will be felt for generations to come and her work must continue through all of us.
Let’s strive to make our Dorothy proud.
