U.S. CELLULAR ENGINEERS BRINGS STEM TO KIDS AT LOCAL BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS
KNOXVILLE, TN (June 19, 2019) – To help inspire interest and understanding of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers, U.S. Cellular representatives visited the Regal Entertainment Teen Center at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley to discuss the important role STEM plays in mobile technology.
U.S. Cellular engineering associates lead an “Ask an Engineer” session where they showed youth how STEM applies to real-world situations, specifically in careers centering on engineering.
During an “Ask an Engineer” session, engineers discussed how they got into the STEM field and the lessons they learned along the way. The children were shown the vital position engineering plays in maintaining a strong communications network in Knoxville.
The children also got a personal rundown of the intricacies of how a text is sent through U.S. Cellular cell sites and how it secures coverage for its customers.
“At U.S. Cellular, we are committed to highlighting the importance of STEM education, so having our engineers explain firsthand its importance in our everyday life is a great learning experience for area youth,” said Joey Chandler, access operations manager for U.S. Cellular in Tennessee. “Our connection to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley allows us to provide opportunities like ‘Ask an Engineer’ in the hopes that these young minds can continue their lifelong learning through STEM and other educational avenues.”
After the presentation, club youth were able to explore U.S. Cellular’s network testing vehicle and equipment, and a tracked ATV that is used to reach remote cellular tower locations.
U.S. Cellular engineers demonstrated how the network operates and how they regularly monitor it. Finally, the club was gifted with several of the latest electronics for the teens to enjoy at the end of the event.
U.S. Cellular has a longstanding commitment to the community and education. Earlier this year the company donated $25,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley and an additional $6,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs throughout East Tennessee.
